Belize was colonized by the British in 1798 and became a full-fledged independent nation within the British commonwealth in 1981. The country's name was changed from British Honduras to Belize in 1972. Because of its British heritage, Belize is the only English speaking country in Central America. Seventy percent of the population also speak spanish.
